» Who we are?

»Brce« Cultural Society (named after the yard in front of the village church) from Gabrovica pri Komnu or namely its theatre group were formed in 1997 as a mere coincidence, just like many interesting things happen out of coincidence. At that time Mr Sergej Verč, the director, and theatre actress Minu Kjuder realized a wish of some individuals and brought together a few of local theatre amateurs. Their purpose was to revive this particular field of culture, known as the gray area of culture. The group has some thirty members. Each season they put to work endurance and diligence and prepare a new theatre performance. Individual performances in the local town underneath the stars, as well as visiting performances in the wider Karst area and abroad won the highest recognition from the critics and numerous public. The »Brce« Theatre Group also received a praising acknowledgment when a few years ago it was chosen to perform at the central amateur theatre festival in Ljubljana. The group also performed twice in front of the Slovenes, living in Paris and Berlin.

Upon the first premiere in June 1997 (Rade Pregarc – Sergej Verč: Merrymaking) Mr. Verč, the director, wrote the following words in the theatre brochure:

»”Merrymaking” brought us closer together, it was strengthening our awareness from week to week that with determination and zealousness it is possible to create a decent cultural event out of nothing. Breaking fresh ground where there is no undergrowth, nothing inherited from the previous times, no old stage scenery, no place for rehearsals, no modest theatrical experiences, is not that simple at all … Without the renaissance awareness, without “giving fire to one another” our pretty Gabrovica would stay in the old way. But this year something moved … Straight-from-the-shoulder to all who speak of backwardness of our Karst villages and grey areas of our culture.«
